Pottery allows me the freedom of working with a third dimension. I love the ability to make a piece that jumps out at you and gets in your face.
When working with this medium, I often model organic shapes and textures borrowed from nature. My photography work with nature and studing texture certainly helps in this area. I try to break away from ordinary pottery choosing rather to combine simple shaped pots and vases with interesting accents.
I do enjoy working with glazes, however, I find that leaving a piece unglazed or partially glazed allows the stoneware or clay to contribute to the organic nature of the piece. Lately I have been exploring the marrage of stoneware and ironwork. My friend Aaron creates the blacksmith components of the pieces and I do the stoneware.
